Hi there,
I need the SDIP socket to suit the CXA1228S IC (as used in Peter Delaney's SPG CQ-TV 174).
Anyone got one they don't need, or can point me in the direction of one please?
(The S stands for skinny!)

I found this by searching for IC Sockets, Row Spacing 10.16mm, 28 pins (2x14), Mating Pitch 1.78mm
There were 8 items found, only one was in stock.
You might be able to cross these part numbers to UK vendors.

Thank you for that very useful reply.
I had not thought to do anything like so detailed a search, but I did have a look.
As I rather expected though the postage kills it stone dead. £15 plus thecost of
a socket is understandable - but silly. I rather think that was what was behind your
suggestion of trying the part number on british sources.
As neither RS nor Farnell have anything I suspect that no one else in this
country has either. (Not even Ebay!)
I will resort to mounting the IC dead bug fashion and using very fine wire!

Hi,
I would take a normal 6/10 inch 28 pin socket, they are more common and easy to get.
And cut the inner plastic with a sharp knife.
Once soldered on the pcb it is no problem that you have two separate rows.

I had thought of the idea Rob PE1CHY suggested and looked for other sockets with the 1.78 mm pin spacing but couldn't find anything suitable. The unusual spacing is the biggest problem in finding a usable part.

If you can make a large enough purchase you will get free shipping from Digi-Key. There must be something you will need in the future.

Hi all,
My apologies for being unable to check here for a few days.
Firstly thank you G7JTT for the US ebay link. I have ordered, and if it works I should have 5 sockets
in the new year for all of 5 Dollars! They may not be the right width, but it is easy to cut that down
as PE1CHY suggests.
The important thing is that the pin pitch is correct.
I did not realise that my registration would work on the American site as well. So I have learnt
something too!

Next thank you G7JTT for that. I love the idea of buying a complex IC just to get the socket! But
as you see I got a result in a more conventional way.

When I get them I will post here. I will keep two, but I am quite happy to give the other three away
to anyone who needs one.

Hello again,
This should wrap this up I feel.
I did get the IC sockets before Christmas, so as promised I now have three of them that I will not need.
So if anyone wants one of them your address sent to me as a PM will get you one.
Naturally I would prefer that they go to someone who will actually use one (as distinct from just putting it into the spares box in case it might be wanted someday) but as I can't check that I won't lose any sleep over it.
If there are no takers then I will probably donate tem to the club shop.

I found that the socket will fit inside the skeleton type of 28 pin 0.1" spaced socket. The centre bar has to be cut away of course, and it will be necessary to file out the side "rails" a bit. Then with care 28 wires can be added to join the inner and outer pins. If the arrangement is to be plugged into the usual white breadboard then the wiring must be with fine wire or there will not be enough pin length left to plug it in.
Unfortunately, after all that, it did not help me to fix the SPG that I have that won't genlock.
Oh Well.
