Interim EMF Compliance Guidance for Amateur Microwaves

Post by G8GKQ » Mon Nov 22, 2021 8:03 pm

Following the EMF presentation by Ian (GM3SEK) and Peter (G4DSE) at the 2021 BATC Convention in October, the BATC and the UKuG formed a small team with Peter and Ian to coordinate the development and communication of EMF compliance guidance to BATC and UKuG members. The aim is to help prepare the RSGB “Pre-Assessed Equipment Configuration #3” report (PAEC-3) to satisfy Ofcom that it provides a valid route to claiming compliance for microwave stations using dishes.

As the full Pre-Assessed Equipment Configuration report will take some time to complete, and operators have the need to perform their EMF assessments now, some interim guidance has been prepared.

You can read the interim guidance here: https://wiki.batc.org.uk/images/0/0e/Pr ... 211122.pdf.

You are welcome to post comments or questions about this interim guidance here, but please bear in mind that the team are still preparing the full report, and you may wish to wait to read that before asking your question.

Thanks to Peter and Ian for the enormous amount of effort that they continue to put into this work on our behalf.

Edit - This was explanation was posted in response to a post that has now been deleted its author. I have rephrased this explanation so that it still makes sense.

The UK Amateur Radio Licence mandates either ICNIRP 1998 or ICNIRP 2020 guidelines. We have to apply one of these, and the ICNIRP 2020 guidelines are more applicable to microwave transmissions, so Peter has applied these.

The modelling used in ITU Recommendation BS1698 (drafted in 2005) is very simplistic compared to that undertaken to produce the Interim Guidance. The Interim Guidance considers both Whole Body Average (computed at 18 sample points across the body), and local exposure (in a 2cm by 2cm area). These are both required for ICNIRP 2020.

Please be patient for the final report - all will become clear.
