Will Winterhill be able to decode h266 if vlc is updated.

Almost certainly, but it will be a software decoder, so it remains to be seen how much cpu resource it needs and how many windows it could handle simultaneously.

Approx 1.5x to 2x the CPU grunt would be needed.
Problem is, who will be able to send it as it need ~10x the CPU grunt to encode c.f H.265.

I'm no expert on CPUs etc but my I7 Gen 4 Desktop (8 years old now) is easy able to deliver 333ks at 15fps, my I7 Gen 7 laptop bouight 'refurbished' about 2.5 years ago equally so. DATVEasy as the generator with eithe rOBS or a C920 lives up to its name.....

Interesting. My relatively recent 6 core Ryzen 5 struggles to generate 333ks 3/4 H266. Perhaps a difference between the CPUs.

I think H.266 encoding will be taxing for a lot of CPUs. There is no QuickSync function available which does H.266 (yet).
I've seen video files go from ~5min to encode at H.265 to ~90min in H.266... that's not a trivial increase in compute...
I think it puts it out of reach for most enthusiasts to be able to encode real-time unless using the very smallest
resolutions and the compression improvement may not be so good with suck low resolutions.
