VLC on remote PC

Post by G4KLB » Sun Apr 04, 2021 12:35 am

Just finished my Winterhill software setup and thought I would share a problem that I encountered.
Everything was working in Local mode but when I changed to Anyhub to use my main PC to view and control I couldn't get VLC to display anything even though the channel change and TS destination was correct and working.
To cut a long story short the problem was incorrect settings on my network.
Found the network profile was set to public and not private, this stopped the UDP stream from being received.
Everything works as it should now.
Just sharing in case someone else encounters the same issue.

I'm surprised you didn't get a firewall pop-up the first time you ran the PC Viewer. That looks like W10, so maybe it's different. I've used W7Pro64 for most of the development and testing.

Quick question:

I've just finished building my WinterHill. Seems to work as described in Local mode - very pleasing :). When I use Anyhub or Anywhere modes and fire up whpcviewer on my PC using the latest quicktune; on first clicking on a signal the picture pops up in the appropriate VLC window but subsequent 'channel changing' appears not to restart VLC and I have to double click on the udp://@99xx in the media list. The information at the top of the selected VLC pane shows the correct data (callsign, mode, FEC etc.), but no picture until I double click. It does make scanning a tad frustrating. Is this expected behaviour or have I missed a config somewhere? My network profile is set to private.

Apart from that the WinterHill appears to do what it says on the tin and everything worked first time. Another BATC work-of-art and the PCB (Mike), is very well thought through :)

No, that's not supposed to happen. The VLC window in whpcviewer should get reset when the callsign or a codec changes. The hint to VLC to do a reset is in the data stream that populates the VLC title bar, so you must be getting the data stream.

Where exactly is the udp://@:99xx ? Is it right-click, OPEN MEDIA, OPEN NETWORK or right-click, PLAYLIST?

If you do right-click, PLAYLIST, what is in the playlist?

Hi Brian,

I've attached a picture of my desktop. If I right click any of the VLC windows I just get what you see on window 4.

When the pictures goes after a channel change, VLC shows what you see in the picture - er, if that makes sense?

All the best - Martin.

Also try a VLC reset:

Close whpcviewer and start a separate VLC window
Right-click, TOOLS, PREFERENCES, RESET PREFERENCES (at the bottom)
Close the VLC window
Open a separate VLC window
In the Privacy window, click CONTINUE
Close the VLC window.

Try whpcviewer again.

Start a separate VLC and click HELP, ABOUT (top rightish)

Hi Brian,

I did as you said and it's still not working as expected. I've got the 32bit version 3.0.11 - Vetinari. I also have the 64bit version 3.0.8 - Vetinari installed and I'm not sure which on whpcviewer is choosing. Is that a setting somewhere?

Many thanks for your prompt replies!

Cheers,

Martin

I'm using 32 bit 3.0.12 on W7 at the moment. I'll check what's running on the W10 PC in the shack.

I haven't seen VLC screens like yours before.

I've just updated both my versions to 3.0.12 and getting the same results.

I've never seen VLC looking like that before either by the way. It looked like that when I first started whpcviewer :)

There was a Windoze 10 update a few days ago. Usually manages to screw something up :(

I'll do a power off restart after tea.
