Ryde receiver at GB3HV -

Post by g8gtz » Sat Apr 03, 2021 6:49 am

I recently installed a Ryde Mk1 receiver on 437MHz at GB3HV and to be honest, the results are amazing!

The system comprises of a small 5 element beam on a rotator with a web interface so users can set the direction. A 2 mt length of Times 400 co-ax feeds a Pye bandpass cavity followed an SPF5043 pre-amp at masthead.

In shack, the 450 co-ax goes into a set of bandpass helicals from an old Key Radio 450 base station and a notch on 433.375 to try and reject GB3FN, the 70cms repeater located less than half a mile away. This then feeds the Ryde rxr set to scan 2MS and 333kS and has replaced an old Comaq SL30 STB.

The system is far more reliable when receiving the locals on 2MS, who used to regularly drop out with interference from a local PMR system.

G4CPE, who could not access HV previously, can reliably access the system over an 82km path and Mike G0MJW can get in with less than 1 watt over a 54km definitely non line of site path.

One further modification to be done is to add a method to enable users to trigger the OSD remotely - probably via DTMF.

The Ryde was a simple drop-in replacement for the old set top box and the performance is beyond expectations - if you haven't installed one yet at your repeater, I would really recommend it, and don't forget you can apply for BATC funding https://batc.org.uk/club-info/bursary-fund/

I can concur with Noel as to how sensitive (and reliable) the Ryde is.
We have one on the 70 and 23cm bands on GB3ZZ in Bristol.
I can get in on 10s of microwatts on 23cm (live about three miles from repeater non line of sight) - other locals can get in with 10s of milliwatts - including G4UVZ, who lives near to Taunton.
Following the successes on HV why not turn your beams towards north Bristol. It's 333/1000/2000 on 23 and 333/1000 on 23 (in addition to the standard other inputs listed here: https://batc.org.uk/live/gb3zz
Although the repeater is 24/7 for some reason the Rydes are only active between 6am and 10pm.
