Ryde has lost HDMI output?

Post by radiogareth » Mon Mar 01, 2021 7:32 am

After working well for a fortnight my Ryde has stopped outputting HDMI.
I have rebuilt the SD card, and tested the monitor lead on a different RPI.
I've tried choosing the 'debugging' mode from the SSH menu. Still nothing.
Running the diagnostics produced the following:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ menu
device_name=DEL-DELL_P2419HC
state 0xa [HDMI CUSTOM RGB lim 16:9], 1920x1080 @ 60.00Hz, progressive
pygame 1.9.4.post1
Hello from the pygame community. https://www.pygame.org/contribute.html
(1920, 1080)
(1, 1)
23.43843916003259
no surface
no layer
Press enter to continue

So to my untrained eye it 'looks like' its seeing the monitor (a Dell as shown).

Any suggestions?? Any way I can get the RPI to use the second HDMI port or has something in driver silicon expired??

Thanks for any pointers....

Hi Gareth

Worry not. I think I know the cause and will fix it later this afternoon. A software configuration control issue.

Watching with interest as mine worked great for two days, I gave up trying all settings and used the composite o/p.

Hi

Gareth and Steve (and anyone else with this problem)

Please could you reselect the full HDMI display, reboot, log into the console, and then enter:

Code: Select all

stop
vlc rtmp://rtmp.batc.org.uk/live/gb3hv
Do you get a picture (internet connection required)? You can press ctrl-c to ext

If that does not work, try a "Development" update (press d at the y/n update prompt) and repeat, please.

And tell me what happens as I can't reproduce the problem.

Hi Dave, Development upgrade did not fix it so I ran the command you provided after exiting to Linux from the Ryde SSH menu - I assume that's right.

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ vlc rtmp://rtmp.batc.org.uk/live/gb3hv

Which looks like all sorts is wrong.....

Hi Gareth

That looks exactly right. I should have asked the $64000 question - was there a picture on the HDMI display?

Nope, nothing. Just listening to the beacon (no picture) having rebooted everything and checked with a different Ryde.
Rerun test - same message, no picture.
For a sanity check (i.e. could the HDMI on board have failed) shall I try a Portsdown card??

Hi Gareth,

Just to clarify, by no picture do you mean one of ryde's red messages saying no video do you get nothing at all i.e. a blank screen?

If you get a blank screen do you get anything while the pi is starting up?

Clarification - beacon was received early evening but audio only.
No picture or screen image of ANYTHING, not even during boot sequence. No 'red screen', no picture, nothing.

This behaviour is what prompted me to consider a hardware fault. I'm using a short, cheap uHDMI to HDMI extension which was my immediate suspect but this has been tested fine on another Ryde/RPi4.

I wasn't aware the RPi4 had any settings it could 'save in flash' (except to the uSDcard) so I'm beginning to think this is hardware failure?

Its a bit strange......
