Mouse alternatives

With a plethora of usb jog shuttle devices being available would it be possible to easily implement one of these without the need to modify a mouse for this purpose?
For example I have used the Contour Shuttle for many projects including SDR control and with it's many buttons would make a perfect device for this build.
