After trying a multitude of things late into last night, I came down this morning and powered up the unit. AND IT WORKS!!!
I have a cheapo USB audio fob (likely CM108 device) plugged in.
Py line of interest:
self.audio_sink_0 = audio.sink(48000, 'hw:CARD=Set,DEV=0', False)
When I tried this last night, I did a "shutdown -r now" and that did get the LED blinking on the FOB, but the Rx was not running. GUI was up.
Apparently the cold boot got things working.
Next I shall attempt the Logitech headset.
I also have a couple of the suggested fob coming in a day or 2.
Thanks to all for the assistance. It helps to know that folks are supportive of noobs. I'm particularly interested in making some QSOs on 3456 before the band goes away in the US. Sure wish we had something like QO-100 over here.
I shall attempt to contribute to the project as I can.

New install: Help with audio please
Re: New install: Help with audio please
Further Success!!!
I changed the line to: hw:H540,DEV=0
then did a cold boot and it works. It appears the COLD BOOT is a key piece of the puzzle.
My Logitech headset is working great!

Great to hear you have it working. Have fun on the higher bands. You will find that receive is usable even without a preamp. Transmit will need a PA though unless you are very local.
People on this forum always try to help where they can but it can be difficult to remotely diagnose a problem, especially when the hardware is different.
If the program fails to start sometimes a cold boot is needed as occasionally there are still parts of the program running unseen in the background.
