I have had great results from old Hands-free car phone mics, the earlier models in a 'clip onto your sun visor' black plastic box, about 1.5" square. They do need a 5V ghost feed though, which means they don't work with the Portsdown/Langstone Dongle which only has around 3 volts on the mic. Should be easy enough to add another DC blocking cap and take a genuine 5V off the USB dongle feed.
Another option might be a 'modern' speech processor, in the mid-2000's I built a little SM kit that fitted into the hand mic on my FT817. It certainly works, but makes the speech very 'breathy' according to reports. CHip is probably obsolete now and I can't find the kit info. Another option might be the SOTA speech compressor, not tried, but there are lots of reviews on the www.

Hello
I am building the Langstone transciver and i like to use a high resolution rotary encoder can any one tell what type and how i can connected as i was readying on the langstone page and i saw the diagram for PC mose connection but i think the high resolution rotary encoder is defferent...

It is solidly made with a good bearing and an optical detector. The only downside is that it is larger than the square click encoders. It has a built in 5 Volt 3 terminal regulator so it will not run from a 5Volt supply (probably needs 8V min). However, it is an easy matter to get inside to bypass the regulator. Whilst you are inside, check the wiring colours rather than rely on the seller's description!
This works very well with the little Arduino board specified by Colin.

I also use the same type of encoder as Russ. I bought the 400 pulse per revolution version.
I agree that you need to open it up and bypass the voltage regulator so that it will work directly from 5V.

I think they are all the same type. The advert says 5 to 24V but when you look inside there is a 7805 regulator. In theory this needs at least 8V input to regulate correctly.
