My 6 year old desktop is not really supporting h265 encoding.
No gfx card, and the i5 also doesnt support it.
Upgrading to a new also raises the wish for portable operation, so a laptop.
Looking at prices, upgrading the desktop vs new laptop, a new laptop is better choice.
Assuming I will use it for the next 5 years:
Lenovo legion 5 or 7 comes at around 2000 to 2500 euro. That is with Ryzen or i7, 1TB SSD, 32mb, and gfx card 3050, 3060 or 3070.
Ryzen seems much better in low power modes and little less in performance. For gaming.
Now, for SDR, DATV receive and DATV transmit (encoding, mixing,...), would such a laptop be overkill?
With my current desktop the only limitation is the encoding of video into my Portsdown, quite a few seconds delay, both for mpeg, h264 or h265 (roundtrip and when looking at the input monitor of the Portsdown). Receive with minitiouner is fine.
What are your experiences?
Thanks

Gfx card and processor
Re: Gfx card and processor
Personally would be overkill for me. I think any Intel i5 or i7 over 6th GEN will do the H265 encoding. See the other posts on this.
I bought a used i7 7th Gen Zenbook Flip for £130, does all I want for ATV. John G8IKP

Re: Gfx card and processor
If you would go for a software encoder like ffmeg you just need a little more cpu power.
Any I7 should be sufficient..
If you expect a hardware h265 encoder you may need to investigate witch notebook GPU would support H265 encoding..
You might pay a lot for that special function of witch i suspect will be out of date within a few years anyway as also H265 will be updated eventually.
Also think about multi screen support where you want to connect the notebook to...
Good luck in a important choosing and be warned: anything you buy today will be outdated tomorrow.
