New Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera

Post by G8GKQ » Mon May 04, 2020 5:28 pm

The new Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/ra ... ty-camera/ went on sale last week, and I believe that initial stocks sold out on the first day.

I ordered one because I wanted to see if it would work with the Portsdown, and also wanted to make use of some of the C-mount zoom lenses that I had sitting in the cupboard. The camera arrived today, and initial indications are that it works with the standard Portsdown. More testing to do, but it all seems to work so far.

Note that if you want to use older C-mount lenses, they will probably produce "telephoto" images, as the sensor size is quite small. The recommended standard lens has a focal length of 6mm; the foundation also sell a "telephoto" lens with 16 mm focal length.

I have now fitted an "HDMI" physical socket to the RPi HQ camera so that I can try it with all my Portsdown transmitters (which are fitted with this interface to extend the camera lead as described here: https://wiki.batc.org.uk/CSI-2_to_HDMI).

Although the camera works perfectly with Portsdown Buster 2020 when directly connected via a Ribbon Cable, the higher video data rates mean that not all HDMI extension cables work.
  • On the normal Raspberry Pi 3B, the camera worked with 2 of of my 3 HDMI leads
  • The LimeNET Micro, which uses an RPi Compute Module, only worked with one of my HDMI leads.
  • I could not get the HQ camera to work at all with the Jetson Nano.
It's a nice camera. I'll start playing with lenses next.
