Static IP Address

Hi,
For the past few days I've successfully been streaming from OBS on Linux, into Portsdown, but on several occasions the Pi has been issued a different IP address from the DHCP server, this has meant that I had to re-edit the OBS batch file with the new IP address. So rather than setup a static address on the DHCP server, I decided to add one to the Portsdown Pi and I added the static address to the 'cmdline.txt' file and rebooted Portsdown.
I found that the new static address didn't work even though I had amended the OBS batch file, however I could ping it and it did work using SSH, then I found that there were two addresses bound to the Pi's NIC, the static address and a DHCP issued address. It appears that the DHCP address would always work with OBS, but the static address didn't, this is possibly due to having two IP addresses on the one NIC?
Has anyone else experienced this issue, and is there way of stopping DHCP on the Pi and forcing it to only have a static IP address?
