USB Extension / Chassis Mount

Post by G4uvz » Wed Dec 26, 2018 9:29 am

OK ...Father Christmas brought me a Logitec camera which works really well plugged into the PI USB port...However I would like to tidy things up with a chassis mounting USB socket and short extension USB lead to the PI. Any ideas / suggestions ? Would be a lot easier to drill a round hole than file a rectangle in front panel! Maybe a 3D printing opportunity?

I fitted my PI in such a way that the sockets were accessible from the back, however, assuming it is already built I would use a USB extension. I have used them in several projects and you can get all the common types. A search for "USB chassis mount" on Ebay came up with several examples fitted into XLR sized panel mountings - a round, if somewhat large hole. Probably the best solution if you have the space.

If you don't like drilling and filing square holes, have you considered getting Q.max cutters? Not too expensive from RS, Farnell, Newark etc. You probably only need a few, e.g. XLR, IEC (mains), DB9. I have not seen any the right size for USB unfortunately. I have a little milling machine but even a drill press and a compound table can get you by for thin panels.

Best tool is a CNC mill but they are £150+

Adrian,
This is a P0835 (23mm mounting hole) from altronics in australia. www.altronics.com.au. I think you will find that RS and farnell do something similar at a higher price.
