Hi Dave G8GKQ,

Thank you for the CAT17 presentation on the Portsdown Project...and thank you to the nice people at BATC who post the presentation(s) on YouTube. It cuts down on my travel costs.

In your Portsdown presentation you asked for "wish list items to be considered". I think that adding capabilities for a Logitech WebCAM would be very useful to many hams...especially new DATVers? The Logitech model C920 seems to be widespread.

I know that I would use webcam as the "camera of choice" when transmitting from home QTH.

I hope a webcam is not too complicated to add?

Hi Ken

Great idea, but I do not have one here to test with, and have no details of what software modifications are required to get it working. As a starting point, please could you post the results of issuing the following 3 Linux Commands with the camera connected:

sudo v4l2-ctl -d0 --all

You may need to change -d0 to -d1 in the last command to find the camera.

I note that you have used the camera for DATV Express. Do you know what its output format is?

Hi Dave G8GKQ,

Thanks for offering to look into the possibility of a web cam capability,

I will look into running those command-line tests today. Because I do not have a monitor and keyboard on the RPi3, it always is awkward for me (not experienced enough) to remember how to:
(1) run the command-line on the RPi3 (via PUTTY) and capture it into a file on RPi3 and save the file on RPi3
(2) then - grab the saved file from RPi3 via PUTTY and save it onto my Win PC.

Hi Ken

No need to go to all that trouble. Just highlight the response in Putty using your mouse, and then paste it directly into a forum post or notepad.

Simply highlighting text in Putty puts it on the Windows clipboard.

The trickiest part of copying command-line text when inside of PUTTY is "highlighting the text with left-mouse-button actually performs the COPY function". I had kept trying to right click the highlighted text area in order to copy...but that does not copy.

There are several video output modes for the C920 webcam. Both F6FZP and G4GUO have explained to me that one C920 video output mode is already MPEG-4 encoded...perhaps YUYV ?? Typically when using DVB-S/MPEG2 with the DATV-Express software, I select 640 630 30 I420 video format. I also have a note from G4GUO for using DATV-Express with C920 that states "I420 is in fact YUV420 so no decompression is required."

I think I can NOT read my own handwriting...and the format was probably 640 430 30 I420
BUT...when I went back to confirm the setting after a few other changes...I lost the ability to transmit good video??
I have been making too many changes in the last few days...between testing with PLUTO-express, and testing with Portsdown and testing with v1.25p2 and the DATV-Express board, I suspect I have corrupted the DATV-Express config file??

Let me report after a fresh install of DAVV-Express v1.25 tomorrow.

As I suspected "640 630 30 I420 video format" was just wrong...it probably had been set to "640 360 30 I420 video format". I just reversed a few numbers and then the confg file became corrupted.

So I have performed a uninstall then installed new DATV-Express v1.25 and now obtain good video with model C920 webcam.

Restating my previous description of video output formats for C920 webcam:
There are several video output modes for the C920 webcam. Both F6FZP and G4GUO have explained to me that one C920 video output mode is already MPEG-4 encoded...perhaps YUYV ?? I have confirmed that Charles G4GUO's distro of v1.25 suggests 720 576 25 YUYV in the config file for the C920. Typically when using DVB-S/MPEG2 with the DATV-Express software, I select 640 480 30 RGB24 video format. I also have a note from G4GUO for using DATV-Express with C920 that states "I420 is in fact YUV420 so no decompression is required."

I had been doing some PLUTO-Express software testing and can confirm that the following video formats all work well with the Logitech C920 webcam:

640 360 30 I420
640 480 30 I420
640 480 30 RGB24
640 480 30 MJPG

There may be some small latency differences (?)...but I have not measured. These formats work well with both H.262 and H.264. I have not recently tested with H.265 .
