Stuck with WHITE screen after boot-up

I seem to have lost my way during the initial set-up steps.

Up until this morning I was stuck with a permanent WHITE LCD screen after boot-up of the RPi3. But, I could always go back to the Putty menus to try a set-up change. I now tried to change the System Setup Autostart area of the Putty/RpiDATV menu…(I can no longer see the menus), but I thought it was the second from the bottom of Setup Autostart choices? I wanted to automatically boot up to the Portsdown Buttons on the touch-screen. After the Autostart change, I immediately tried to select REBOOT option from the SHUTDOWN AND REBOOT OPTIONS menus.
1) I never saw power LED on RPi3 turn-off or restart or flicker?
2) I did see a “Putty Fatal error” message that said “server unexpectedly closed network connection”.
3) I did see the Putty console message say that RPi3 was going to shutdown…but the WHITE LCD screen never changed or flickered?

So at this point, I removed RPi3 power…then plugged RPi3 power back in to reboot.
4) Now when Putty obtains my ID sign-in, it says: pi@192.168.1.100’s password: I think the console used to just say “password:” ??
5) when I enter “raspberry” I get a Putty console message that includes the message “NO TOUCH SCREEN FOUND – no file or directory
6) I can no longer see the RpiDATV Putty menu? And I still have a permanent WHITE LCD screen on boot-up

Any suggestions on what I should do next? 73...de Ken W6HHC

The red LED should remain on. The green LED will flash.

Correct.

As expected.

This is normal

This is not normal. See below.

You need to get back to the Console menu on Putty. So press control and C together to make sure that nothing else is happening and then type:

Code: Select all

/home/pi/rpidatv/scripts/menu.sh menu
and then press enter.

Go to System Setup, Display and make sure that the * is against Waveshare, and then press enter (important).

Then reboot as you did before. If the display does not work, we have to start fault-finding. My first question would be what is you display type and where did you get it? Next, are you connecting directly to the RPi or using a GPIO card? Have you ever seen anything other than permanent white on the screen? Have you typed any Linux commands (such as sudo rpi-update) since you received the card?

Let's hope that it does not come to that!

Hi Dave G8GKQ,

SUCCESS...I now see the Portsdown buttons on the LCD Touchscreen and a nice DVB-S "haystack" on my spectrum analyzer at 1290 MHz via the DATV-Express as the modulator.

The command line bash path to menu that you provided did the trick!!!! Thanks. (I will not tell you how many times I had to type that bash command to get it right...no fun when I can not see what I am typing.)

The root-cause of the WHITE screen was that DISPLAY setting had somehow changed to TONTEC35 ???? (I had earlier seen "BATC logo" being displayed.)

Last question...once I pressed TX...the screen went blank. (1) How do I go to RX at that point? (I did figure out how go back to RpiDATV menu OK).

I had a glass of champagne to celebrate !! Thank you for your patience and assistance to a "Portsdown newbie"....de Ken W6HHC

Hi Ken

You can get back to receive by touching the screen at the same place as the transmit button was (it's a toggle).

You say you had a blank screen on transmit - what source did you have selected?

You're not the only one to have had the problem with the screen going back to TonTec. I am trying to find the cause, but have not been able to reproduce the fault, so I'm finding it a bit difficult....

Hi Dave G8GKQ,

I finally discovered the USERS GUIDE in the HOW TO GET STARTED topic. Good stuff!! USERS GUIDE is what I needed...but had not gotten that far down the HOW TO GET STARTED list at the point of my last question about "how to go back to RX". I now understand about touching the LCD screen where TX button had been previously located.

I am NOT too worried yet about my dark screen after touching TX. I am confident I have NOT completed all of the set-up configurations properly yet. BUT...in the USA "the tax man cometh""...on April 15. So I am just bouncing around to Portsdown as "the tax man" permits...hi hi.

I agree with you that I do NOT know what caused me to end up with TonTec selected. I certainly did not try to select TonTec...and the WaveShare LCD had correctly displayed the BATC Logo earlier on.

Thank you and the rest of the Portsdown team for your EXTRAORDINARY support for this terrific project.

Thanks to all that make Portsdown "happen"...de Ken W6HHC

Hi Dave G8GKQ,

I have made good progress today with transmitting on my Portsdown-RPi3-DATV-Express set-up...up to a point.
My "dark screen during transmit" is gone, and I see plenty of BATC-logo or the Pi-camera video being shown on LCD Touchscreen.

I get a good spectrum-analyzer" DVB-S haystack", but while my MiniTiouner (v05a) shows a clean lock on MPEG4 and nice MER and GRAPH=GREEN, the video display area says "NO Video or BAD codec/PID". The only reading that catches my eye on the "expert measurements display" on MiniTiouner is that the VPID is reported as 256 and APID is reported as 255. I had intended to set the PIDs as:
PMT/Video/Audio = 255/256/257.
BUT I can only find a way to set PMT=255 in the Putty SSH menu. I can NOT seem to locate the way to specify VPID or APID in the menu set-up for PIDs...only PMT??? That is: MENU=OUTPUT->PIDS

My current set-up for MPEG4/Pi-Cam is:
Freq=1290 MHz
SR-2200 KSymb/s
FEC=7/8
PMT-PID = 255

Can you spot any problems in my set-up parameters above (seems like enough video bitrate) for MPEG4/PiCam?

PS - I ran into the "WHITE screen" issue again after lots of CTL-C and REBOOTS etc. And sure enough, the TONTEC LCD had somehow become selected again!!!

Thanks for any guidance you can provide on setting APID and VPID directly...de Ken W6HHC
