Portsdown4 and « C920 pro »
Portsdown4 and « C920 pro »
Hi all,
Regarding the webcams supported by Portsdown 4, it’s specified: « The Portsdown 4 works with all (3) versions of the C920 »
Do these three versions include the « C920 pro » which available at some retailers ? If not, does someone know the status for this « pro » version ?
In advance thank you !!!

Hi Christophe
Support for C920 webcams is discussed on this Wiki Page: https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Portsdown_Vide ... ld_Version
To determine whether the C920 pro is supported, you would need to run the command "lsusb" and check the camera's response aganst the 3 supported versions.
If it is a (4th) different version, I would need listings of the responses to lsusb and the 4 other commands listed at the top of that Wiki page to determine whether support could be added.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your answer !!
I have no supported Webcam so far (or to be honest I lost a C920 or C930 somewhere in my mess ) , so I need to purchase one ... I dug a little bit more on all the discussions around the C920 ... it seems that many versions exist ... complex ....
So I think I will start with a C170 ... as it seems that only one version exists, right ? so this is more safe/deterministic .. then at beginning I target only low SR so I don't need absolutely a "high end" camera !

Hi Christophe,
may I suggest you buy a PiCam? the old model which I guess is still avalable. it's cheaper than a C170 or 920 and allows you to watch on the screen, during transmission, the image you send while with the webcam, as far as I know, it's not possible...
consider that the PiCam is maybe more complicated to handle...as it is connected to the RasPi with a flat ribbon cable, so not so easy to move around!

Hi Claudio,
Yes you are right the Picam is a good choice and I already have one !
But as you mentioned, the way this cam is connected is quite complex to handle and at the end the set-up is not so robust , this is why I am looking for an alternate solution !
That being said, a picam can be mechanically integrated in the box hosting the screen and could become a robust set-up ... to be investigated as well !
Anyway thank you all for your feed-backs and advice !

Re: Portsdown4 and « C920 pro »
Hi,
I finally purchased a C920 named "C920 PRO HD Webcam" ... the one available at Amazon
So I share the result with you (it could be helpful for someone):
- It works , clearly visible using the C920 monitor
- the lsbub commands gives : "Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:08e5 Logitech, Inc." => So the third type which us mentioned here https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Portsdown_Webc ... itech_C920
- the webcam related information in the info menu of Menu 2 indicates: "new with no H264"
Everything seems to be ok => Next step a local transmission test
Thank you for this helpful discussion
