How to use an ADX extender ?!

This must seem obvious but so far I am unable to get any signal on the beacon using my Octagon SF8008 with either position of the internal switch btw. I am using OpenATV 6.3 so is this the problem I wonder ie does it have to be using a specific Linux image like vix etc ?

It's not in the slightest bit obvious I am afraid as you have not described what you are trying to do.
First hit in for Wikipedia for ADX extender - Intel Multi-Precision Add-Carry Instruction Extensions
Try google - ADX ProAudio device to send ADAT over Ethernet cable. Most of the links point to some form of Audio extender so I assume you are trying to extend it's output over the network
If you are using the Octagon SF8008 RX and simply trying to receive the beacon on it locally (why are you fiddling inside with switches) then you should be following the instructions and using one of the recommended images. A google for SF8008 DATV came up with many hits there is a very useful thread here, in German but that's no problem these days
https://forum.amsat-dl.org/index.php?th ... -receiver/ linking to this PDF amongst others
http://dd1ku.de/OCTAGON_8008.pdf and links to images which should get it receiving.
I don't know how you can extend the audio over the ethernet I am afraid. If it's like other linux receivers it should just work.

ADX Converter is an upconverter manufactured by Global, I've seen one but I don't know whether it has switching for different frequencies. The device is mentioned here
https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Receiving_Osca ... TV_signals
ATVFAN are you referring to a switch in the ADX device? What are the options?
My software was obtained using Mike's links, have a read.

I use one on a standard STB, the switch inside select's either + or - shift in frequency. One thing to remember is the LO is a DRO so not that stable, but works ok on 1Ms or above.
Hope that helps John G7JTT
