Is anyone actually receiving BADR5 TV in the UK. And if so what is their dish etc ? (it may be here, but as a newbie I'm drowned in unread posts)

Badr 5 is mostly pointed at Africa/Asia and I think it would need a very large dish to receive it in the UK. If you are looking for transponders on it, I doubt you will find any unless you have access to Goonhilly. I don't know about the beacons, they may be on a broader beam.

Several of us have been able to receive Badr-4, which is at the same location 26E. Specifically we have been looking at the BBC Arabic service on 11.996 GHz, Horizontal Polarisation and 27500ks FEC 3/4. This seems to be receivable with dishes of 90cm and up. Smaller dishes more of a challenge.

MERs from about 6dB and up have been reported. I have a 2.4m dish and an MER of 12 but possibly trees in the way. With my 1.2m dish I had an MER of 8.

Thanks Mike, just what I needed, I wonder where I got the 5 from ?

With a 1M dish in South Devon would it be OK ? Not bought a dish yet, but I would like aluminum, size not overly an issue.

What would be the easiest and fastest receive system to use ?

Hi Dave

Your will need a MiniTiouner to receive most of the potential DATV signals but suggest you have a read of the latest CQ-TV 261 as there was a couple of articles in there about setting up and receiving Es'hail-2.

And yes a 1 mt should be OK...

The comment above talking about the BADR-5 beacons perhaps? Beacons often have a wider coverage than the transponders.

Good idea, just read your 2 articles.

What I would like right now, is a receiver with something like HDMI video o/p that will when plugged into an LNB, will decode and display BBC Arabic TV feed from Badr-4 with also a good SNR, C/N or MER readout ? Something from Amazon perhaps ?

Or something similar ? Out of the box, simple and quick.

New information on satellite location - not verified - but check the websites:

CelesTrak.com has on it updated TLEs for the satellite, dated yesterday.
N2YO.com indicates from its satellite tracker that it is located at 24.03E.

Got my 1m dish aligned on BADR-4 this afternoon. Not quite as good signals as some people have but I can tweak when I have a second pair of eyes to give feedback, up and down the ladder isn't the best way to go.

You may find the easiest way to do the final tweak is to use the beacon on 10706 MHz.

You can receive it on an RTL dongle and any SDR program or a scanner / wideband rx tuned to 956MHz, switch to NBFM and it should be in smoothish noise, just right for final tweaks...
